Tropical Pale is unlike any beer we’ve ever released before at Breakside.

It began as one of our Freestyle Friday ideas, a foray into the outer perimeter of the world of hops and a chance to test out new ideas. We combined modern West Coast hops with a clean base pale ale and some hop-derived terpenes to create a beer that combines underlying dank notes with strong tropical fruit flavors. We get huge notes of white grapefruit, pineapple, tangerine, guava, and passionfruit.

This isn’t a beer that you need to “learn to appreciate.” We believe that when you want to indulge and enjoy a beer, the beer should meet that moment.

Maybe we were trying to march to our own drummer, to prove a point that you could make delicious and modern West Coast IPA without defaulting to using the trinity. Regardless, we’re changing that now with Shine Dream Smile. We’re going heavy on our selected lots of these PNW hops and leaning into multiple forms of each: classic pellets, concentrated lupulin charges, and even some isolated, lot-specific terpenes.
